Can you believe it? Edition Number 6 of the one and only STARTUP WEEKEND is cooking up!

Happy to be back at entrepreneurial hotspot CoCoon at the edge of Causeway Bay to allow budding entrepreneurs and their teams to cook up the next billion dollar enterprise.

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.

So here is the deal. Friday 11 – Sunday 13 April, in Cocoon – your opportunity to bring business ideas to reality. Or, to work with others in a team to design and build a business.
No talk, all action – go out and talk to potential customers. Validate your ideas and execution.
During the weekend you will be supported by a team of experienced mentors to maximise the learning. Tickets include 6 meals, drinks and snacks from Friday night to Sunday night and ate HKD 400 (discounted to HKD 290 for programmers and designers).

Allison Baum

Allison Baum is a Managing Director of Fresco Capital Advisors and is involved in all aspects of investment and operations. Previously, as Regional Director of Asia at General Assembly, she established and grew the company’s first education programs for technology, business, and design in Hong Kong. .After earning a B.A. in Economics and a Secondary Degree in Film Studies from Harvard University, Allison worked in Equity Derivatives Sales & Trading at Goldman Sachs in New York and as an Associate Producer for the Microlending Film Project, a documentary about micro finance for women around the world. She continues to contribute to the cause for female empowerment through an education initiative called Arts and Enterprise for Women, which teaches business skills to refugee and asylum seekers in Hong Kong.

Andy Ann

Andy is the founder and CEO of NDN GROUP, a digital media and advertising firm established in 2002.
He has guided NDN from an early stage company to an expanding and profitable enterprise with a
diversified group of Global clients in the consumer products, telecommunications and entertainment
industries. He also has founded, a Web 2.0 Wedding Portal for China. He has pioneered in the online
wedding industry in China and has created an unique personal wedding planning online tool. In 2008, Andy founded Hot Mob, one of the leading mobile advertising companies in Hong Kong. Andy graduated from University of British Columbia in Canada and he acquired his EMBA degree at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2005, he was awarded as Hong Kong's Top 10 Innovative Entrepreneur. In 2006, he was awarded as Winner for Innovation and Creativity presented by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. In 2007, his company was awarded as Red Herring Asia Top 100 Company. In 2008, he was awarded as Young Entrepreneur Winner of DHL and SCMP Hong Kong Business Award.

Gene Soo

StartupsHK Co-Founder and Director
Gene Soo is a serial entrepreneur and has launched businesses in tech and fashion space. He is a computer engineer by training and has worked in Silicon Valley as an engineer at SanDisk and also at Accenture as a management consultant. Since returning to Hong Kong in 2009, Gene has worked at a family office and also at 6waves as a Business Development Director. Besides having co-founded StartupsHK, Gene also co-founded StyleNearby, a mobile platform for showcasing designs in a city and is also the director of S.Nine by Susanna Soo, a womenswear fashion label.
Gene has been active in pushing for a better startup ecosystem in Hong Kong and has been involved in technology, mobile, gaming and fashion start-ups space. Gene received his BS and MS in Electrical and Computer Engineer from Carnegie Mellon University as well as a MBA from Columbia University.

Joanne Ooi

CEO & Co-Founder,
Ooi is the CEO and co-founder of international fine jewelry ecommerce site,, which won the Most Innovative Retailer of the Year award from the industry in 2012. Plukka retails exclusive, extremely creative, best-quality fine designer jewelry at huge savings through an innovative online business model which eliminates middlemen. Prior to Plukka, in 2009, Ooi founded environmental NGO, Clean Air Network ("CAN"). Ooi was nominated to Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential" list in 2011, for CAN's impact on environmental policymaking and awareness. Before CAN, Ooi was the Creative Director of Shanghai Tang. Largely credited with the turn-around of Shanghai Tang in 2004, Ooi has been profiled in the New York Times, Time Magazine, Good Morning America and appeared on the cover of Fast Company Magazine, among many other international media. Ooi graduated from Columbia University and has a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Keith Li

Keith Li is the CEO and co-founded of mobile applications development startup, Innopage Limited, specialized in e-Publishing technologies and mobile apps development for iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Smart TV platforms. His current suite of Apps include Worthy, Carrot, and Ticker, they were all heavily featured by Apple on the App Store when first released. Keith is a frequent guest speaker for local universities and industry organizations. In 2011, Keith was invited by HK Publishing Federation and The HK Printers Association as guest speaker to share e-Book development experiences at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the most important annual event for worldwide printers and publishers.


Ada Yuen

With over a decade of comprehensive UX experience, Ada Yuen deep experience leading and/or collaborating on strategy, design, and execution to drive conversions and ROI for web-based and app experiences. Through partnership with stakeholders at every phase of the UX lifecycle, Ada adds value to conceptual, high-level, and interaction design. Ada is truly passionate about the field, and is a regular participant in industry thought leadership and professional development events. Whether partnering with start-ups on product vision, or resolving extremely time-sensitive release issues for MNCs, she is strategic, insightful, and proactive.Ada currently resides in Hong Kong and works with clients worldwide to create functional, intelligent, and responsive design.

Aditya Kedia

Aditya is a Design Researcher, Strategist and Educator with expertise and experience in Human Centered Design for innovation and problem solving. He has worked with corporate, start-ups, non-profits as well as educational institutes and comes from a diverse educational and professional background. He believes in harnessing the power of human centered design to drive change at individual, social and organizational level for a delightful user experience and sustainable development. Some of his key areas of interest include interactive media, wearable technology, 3D printing and data visualization.He is also active with community engagement and manages few communities and initiatives built around Design Thinking. For his current assignment, he is working as lecturer and researcher at School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University."

Ashwin Anandani

Ashwin is responsible for shaping, directing and leading product development at On-Off Design & Technology. He has a love for being an all-rounder, and was born to work in sprint-based methodologies.An entrepreneur at heart, Ashwin thrives when there are problems to be solved, decisions to be made and mountains to climb. As a co-founder for a mobile app startup in Silicon Valley and myriad other (almost random) businesses for the last 8 years, Ashwin knows first-hand the trials of getting a new business off the ground. He's learned valuable lessons which he loves to share, and uses an inspiration to keep improving his skills.

Fiona Lau

Fiona Lau, COO of Shopline, has a background in finance and business development with a focus on the retail and consumer industry in Asia. She brings over 5 years of valuable experience from equity research on the Hong Kong/China/Taiwan retail sector at Goldman Sachs and looking at new growth opportunities at Hong Kong Disneyland. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Psychology with Honors from the University of Chicago. She is also a Chartered Financial Analyst. Constantly look for innovative ways to acquire and retain customers, Fiona is the chief marketer and hustler at Shopline.

Holger Bartel

Holger Bartel is a web designer & developer. He co-founded uforepublic design studio in 2001 and opened the Hong Kong branch in 2009. He now mostly works with his web design consultancy firm foobartel Ltd, creating web experiences with a focus on mobile. He's passionate about building awareness for a future-friendly & standards-based web, founded and runs the Open Device Lab HK in 2012 and occasionally speaks at international web design conferences.

Jason Li

Jason Li has worked with tech companies and startups in San Francisco, Barcelona, Beijing and Hong Kong. Past clients include Skype, Microsoft, Intel, Philips and MySpace. Over the course of his career, he has played the roles of founder-designer, creative director, consultant and wireframing peon.

Jennifer Cheng

A successful serial entrepreneur and businesswoman, Jennifer was first involved with startups such as and, and held management positions with industry leaders Darizi and Rackspace Hosting. Following those positions, she took on the online group buying mantle, first with uBuyiBuy, which was later acquired by Groupon, and then as Vice President of BEECRAZY, Hong Kong’s group buying and eCommerce leader. Jennifer’s was awarded the title of Most Promising Entrepreneur at the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2011 in Hong Kong. In 2012, Jennifer was recognized with the SuperAchiever Woman Award at CMO Asia. Jennifer’s exciting new venture, Glam-it!™, which began in fall 2012, allows her to combine her experience in eCommerce and social media with her love of beauty, fashion, and luxury. Glam-it!™’s mission is to develop products that are chic and sophisticated to help women “put the ‘am’ in Glam”, whether they are running errands, on-the-go, or getting ready for a special occasion.

Graham Leach

A broadly skilled business development specialist, Graham has over 20 years of commercial experience in high technology, health sciences, entertainment, manufacturing along with many other sectors. He has worked with IBM, Microsoft, Bayer Pharmaceuticals and many other Fortune 500 companies. He has held C-Level positions at several firms (CTO, CIO, CEO) and founded a few companies of his own. Graham is now a Special Project Leader and Visiting Lecturer at The Polytechnic University of Hong Kong,
Graham Leach attended Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec between 1991 - 1995 where he focused on learning Computer Science and the History of China. He then attended the MBA program at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia from 1999 - 2000. He has since studied at the Chinese Language program at The Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing from 2002 - 2003.

Julian Lee

Julian is the CEO and founder of Ambi Labs, a startup that is reinventing how consumers interface with common household appliances. Their first product, Ambi Climate applies predictive intelligence to your home AC, giving you automatic personalised comfort. Prior to founding Ambi Labs, Julian advised companies on their corporate, marketing and financial strategies for over a decade. After graduating from Imperial College London with a MEng in Mechanical Engineering, Julian embarked on a career in strategy consulting. Julian has been involved in companies across a range of industries including telecommunications, natural resources, electronics, biotech, healthcare and agriculture. More recently, he was a VP in a private equity fund investing in growth stage companies in China. In mid-2010, Julian heard about the global hackerspace movement, and subsequently co-founded HK's first hackerspace, Dim Sum Labs, rekindling his interest in technology and hacking. The co-founders and core team at Ambi Labs are people that Julian met, and collaborated, with at DSL.

Jeffrey Broer

Jeffrey, a Dutch entrepreneur. He is Co-Founder of Surround App (2012) a mobile app startup, CCO and Co-founder of (2008) a Data Recovery company and Founder of Grayscale LTD (2011) a HK based Dutch Web design company. He was Co-Founder of Goldpoint (1998) a computer component wholesale company and Founder of Compactive (1995) a IT consultancy firm.
He mentors startups, bootstraps them and supports enthusiastic entrepreneurs. Currently he’s working on a mobile startup Surround App ( from AcceleratorHK Co-hort #1. Originally schooled as a Commercial Mechanical Engineer, his knowledge and expertise cover the whole supply chain from initial product development to ultimate design marketing programs. This is shown through 2 other companies he founded and is running in Europe and Hong Kong. Jeffrey lives and works in Hong Kong.

Julie Ng

With more than four years' experience working with different organisations from government campaign, private company, universities to social enterprise, Julie specialises in marketing and UX design. She is also part of the winning team of Startup Weekend (Spring 2013) and graduate in the Accelerator HK incubation program. As a fan in collaborative consumption, her latest venture is - a home cooks online network where foodies share and buy homemade food.

Kit Yeung

Kit graduated from Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor and M.Phil Degree in Electronic Engineering. He previously worked in Beansbox Studio Limited and has extensive experience working with CSS, Javascript, jQuery, PHP as well as Drupal which is the well known open sourced Content Managment System (CMS). In 2012, he launched a website called QPon which is an online coupon platform. Kit is a travel lover and he completed the round island cycling in Taiwan last year. Mart van de Ven

Mart van de Ven co-founded Open Data Hong Kong to inspire and nurture a techno-social revolution in Hong Kong. He believes Open Data is a chance for citizens to be better served by government. Not only because it enables greater transparency and accountability, but because when governments open up their data it allows them to concentrate on their irreducible core - enabling us as citizens. He is also Open Knowledge Foundation's ambassador to Hong Kong, a data-driven developer and technology educator for General Assembly.

Minerva Tantoco

Ms. Tantoco is CTO, APAC Client-Facing Technology covering innovation. Since her software startup in Silicon Valley in the 1980s, Ms. Tantoco has led emerging technology initiatives including artificial intelligence, e-commerce, virtualization, online marketing and mobile enterprise. Ms. Tantoco holds four US patents on intelligent workflow and is a speaker and author on mobile, security, big data, and innovation trends, and was recently featured in the Leadership column on Minerva's passion is to encourage more girls to pursue careers in technology and support women entrepreneurs.

Michelle Sun

Michelle is the CEO and cofounder of First Code Academy, an education startup that aims to bring programming to our next generation. Prior to founding First Code, she held various technical roles in high growth startups in Silicon Valley, including Buffer and Bump Technologies (acquired by Google in 2013). Born and raised in Hong Kong, she graduated from University of Chicago and began her career at Goldman Sachs.

Raphael Cohen

Raphael worked for Rocket Internet as Managing Director of foodpanda Vietnam and DropGifts Singapore, before joining HotelQuickly as Chief Sales Officer. As serial entrepreneur, he previously founded the online graphic design outsourcing company Corporate Edesign, as well as CGHK Export, a China-focused trading company. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce, and exchanged to the University of Hong Kong and Shanghai Jiaotong University. Raphael was born and raised in Paris, but lived in Toronto, Shanghai, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong, which is also the reason why he speaks 6 languages and travels so much.

Raymond Yip

Raymond Yip, CEO of Shopline, is a veteran technologist who has managed the engineering and delivery of software products for large corporate teams in New York City and Hong Kong. Over an extensive career in corporate technology, he has led product design and development efforts during that span. Aside from enterprise technology, he has also created and launched a multitude of products including e-commerce sites, a web/mobile social network and Facebook applications in the past. He was the UI designer on the winning team at the April 2013 edition of Startup Weekend Hong Kong for Best User Experience.

Simon Newstead

Simon Newstead is the co-founder and CEO of Frenzoo, the leading 3d mobile game maker for women. Prior to that Simon ran emerging technology at Juniper Networks APAC. He is also an angel investor in 2 mobile and 2 hardware companies.

Sonalie Galardi-Este

Tony Wong

Tony Wong, CTO of Shopline, is an entrepreneur and software engineer that has extensive experience in Web and Mobile Apps development. He gained much of his experience in the media industry while working at TVB.COM as an Engineer and Next Media as a Project Manager. Tony developed and released the popular mobile app myEPG for TVB.COM in just 2 months. He is passionate about startups and is experienced in startup dynamics as a founding member of Viss, a mobile app focusing on fashion in Asia. Tony was an Overall Winner at Startup Weekend HK 2013 and he also holds a Master of Science from HKUST Business School. Prior to moving to Hong Kong, Tony has lived and worked in different parts of the world, including Latin America, Canada and other parts of South East Asia, giving him unique insight into many emerging markets around the globe.

Siu Shan Lau

Siu Shan is a digital media specialist and a User Experience Lead focusing on design strategies, product design and business model development. Her approach is to drive the launch of business and products through applying Human Centered Design with Lean UX and Agile methods. Siu Shan fulfilled senior UX design roles in technology firms and has over a decade of industry experience. Her experience has led her to collaborating work with startups on translating ideas to a viable business model. Siu Shan is a native from England and currently lives and works in Hong Kong.

Tracy Turo

- Co-Founder, Analytics & Finance, Ekowarehouse
-Background in marketing/data analysis, strategic management, algorithm pricing development and government negotiation- over 6 years at Liberty Mutual Group in Seattle.

Amit Chatterjee

Amit is seasoned digital professional with a passion for making things move. Using a wide variety of tools in web/mobile development, animation and video production, Amit helps his clients breathe life into their stories.

Douglas Leung

Douglas has been a client advisor for high net worth clients in a global private bank since 2007. He oversees client relationships and provides strategic wealth management advice according to client's investment objective. Apart from traditional asset classes, Douglas also advices alternative investment ideas, such as hedge fund, private equity, venture capital, direct investment, for clients.

Joe Sciacchetano

Joe is an investment manager with Kinyoon Group, a private equity and venture capital firm based in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China. His focus is on cross-border acquisitions of technology companies that have strong growth potential in the Chinese market. Joe graduated in 2009 with a degree in philosophy from the University of Florida, and has worked in China for almost four years. He also has previous experience working as an analyst for Merrill Lynch in the USA.

John Timms

John Timms has been with UBS since 2005 and is currently working as a risk manager in the investment bank. John started his career with UBS in London and then moved to New York before coming to Hong Kong in 2011. John is part of the UBS Ascent program and is a member of a team looking at how the bank interacts with technology start-ups in the region.

Gerhard Pretorius

Gerhard Pretorius is an Enterprise Lead Engineer at Rackspace Asia – specialising in the design, implementation and management of mission-critical IT infrastructure & Cloud environments. Gerhard has been with Rackspace for 10 years, witnessing first-hand how Cloud computing is transforming technology and helping customers take full advantage.
