It has been good to see lots of activities boiling up in the Hong Kong startup scene…

Though the one and only STARTUP WEEKEND is back!

The Good Lab will be the LAB where budding entrepreneurs and their teams will cook up the next billion dollar enterprise.

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.

So here is the deal. Friday 1 – Sunday 3 November, in The Goodlab in Cheung Sha Wan – your opportunity to bring business ideas to reality. Or to work with others in a team to design and build a business. No talk, all action – go out and talk to potential customers. Validate your ideas and execution. During the weekend you will be supported by a team of experienced mentors to maximise the learning.Ticket price will be revealed when sign up is ready though might have different brackets for designers, developers and students, and HKD for business people. Price includes 6 meals, drinks and snacks from Friday night to Sunday night!

Bernard Suen

Project Director - CUHK CFE   |  

Bernard has worked in the creative, ICT, and education industries for over twenty years with domestic, PRC, and International consulting and management experiences. He has served in various top management and operational positions for both publicly listed and private companies. He is currently the co-founder of Intechnigence Limited and vice-chairman of Hong Kong Opensource Learning Society.

Since 2001, Bernard has developed courses related to entrepreneurship, design and innovation, new media, and creative industries for Chinese University of Hong Kong. He also conducts workshops and seminars on the same topics for other private and public organizations. As a project director of CUHK Center for Entrepreneurship, Bernard specializes in projects related to the creative industries. He is also advises to several public and private organizations in the creative sectors such as being the advisor of the 2011 Hong Kong Design Index and moderator of the 2013 Design Change Round Table Series. Currently, he is a member ofthe CUHK consultant team to the Incubation programmes of Hong Kong Science Park and Hong Kong Design Centre.

Casey Lau

Co-founder - StartupsHK   |  

Casey Lau is one of the Hong Kong tech start-up pioneers starting in 1998 with HK's first e-commerce site specialising in collectible action figures which was sold to Richard Li's PCCW group in 2000, he also co-counded Velocity9, a multimedia design studio sold in 2002 and the Popcorn Network, a digital media company that publishes luxury shopping sites.

He is a leader and an influencer in Hong Kong's growing social media industry having developed a strong presence on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms and has consulted Hong Kong businesses on best practices in their digital marketing and design.

He is one of the original co-founders of StartupsHK, Hong Kong's premiere startup community creating events for startups to meet and share. He is also the newly appointed Community Developer for SoftLayer's Catalyst program in Asia-Pacific providing virtual incubator services for startups across the region.

In between obeying the orders of his British Shorthair, he tries to find time to write new iPad comic books like Super Kaiju Hero Force.

Felix Lam

Angel Investor - Red Chapel Advisors   |  

An angel investor and startup advisor for early-stage technology companies in Hong Kong and Asia.

Felix is currently the Executive Board Member for TiE Hong Kong and Entrepreneur-in-Residence for Cocoon, a vibrant community of entrepreneurs. He is also a member of the Hong Kong Business Angel Network (HKBAN) and serves as a mentor & vetting committee member for a number of startup incubators and business angel programmes in the region.

Prior to that, he held engineering, sales & marketing positions for Alcatel-Lucent, Hewlett-Packard and Nortel Networks in the Asia Pacific region. He holds a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering (First Class Honours) and Master of Engineering Science in Telecommunications from the University of New South Wales. Felix was awarded the Australian Students Prize in 1990.

Jon Buford

Cheap, good, and fast, pick all three. Jon comes from a traditional product development and manufacturing background, having spent a decade in and around the toy industry in development, marketing, and sales roles. His expertise is in electromechanical system design, but typically plays the role of connector in a multi-disciplinary team.

He has been involved with the Hong Kong tech startup scene since 2009, when he was one of the original founders for StartupsHK. On the rebound from his first online startup, he founded BootHK in 2010, bringing co-working to Hong Kong and providing an accessible space for the startup community to grow.

He currently spends his time running Makible, the home of the world’s most affordable and simple 3D printer, the USD $200 MakiBox A6, which is made in Hong Kong.

Steven Kopec

Steven has been in Information Technology for more than 15 years. He came to Turner Broadcasting in 2000 as a Systems Analyst and in 2007 moved to Hong Kong where he is currently Director, Emerging Technology. In this role, Steven has a focus on connected devices, advanced television and audience analytics as Turner Broadcasting evolves to compete in a more connected world. Most recently, his efforts have included work on mobile product creation, alternate content distribution technologies, digital education and social content discovery and creation.

In his past, Steven has also held many roles including those of Information Security Program Manager, Systems Analyst and Programmer. He attended the University of South Carolina at Columbia, SC with a major in Mathematics and Computer Science.

Jason Li has worked with tech companies and startups in San Francisco, Barcelona, Beijing and Hong Kong. Past clients include Skype, Microsoft, Intel, Philips and MySpace. Over the course of his career, he has played the roles of founder-designer, creative director, consultant and wireframing peon.

Jeffrey Broer

Jeffrey, a Dutch entrepreneur. He is Co-Founder of Surround App (2012) a mobile app startup, CCO and Co-founder of (2008) a Data Recovery company and Founder of Grayscale LTD (2011) a HK based Dutch Web design company. He was Co-Founder of Goldpoint (1998) a computer component wholesale company and Founder of Compactive (1995) a IT consultancy firm.

Andrew Chan

Daniel Szuc

Dan is co-founder of Apogee, a design research & usability services company based in Hong Kong. He recently co-authored the book Global UX with Whitney Quesenbery, a collection of stories and distillation of insights from UX practitioners around the world. He also co-wrote The Usability Kit with Gerry Gaffney, an implementation guide providing best practices and guidelines for UX design teams. Dan previously worked on a usability team for Telstra Australia and has lectured about UX in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the USA, New Zealand, Israel, UK, and Japan. He holds a BS in Information Management from Melbourne University in Australia.

Graham Leach

A broadly skilled business development specialist, Graham has over 20 years of commercial experience in high technology, health sciences, entertainment, manufacturing along with many other sectors. He has worked with IBM, Microsoft, Bayer Pharmaceuticals and many other Fortune 500 companies.  He has held C-Level positions at several firms (CTO, CIO, CEO) and founded a few companies of his own.  Graham is now a Special Project Leader and Visiting Lecturer at The Polytechnic University of Hong Kong,
Graham Leach attended Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec between 1991 - 1995 where he focused on learning Computer Science and the History of China. He then attended the MBA program at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia from 1999 - 2000. He has since studied at the Chinese Language program at The Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing from 2002 - 2003.

Keith Li

Keith Li is the CEO and co-founded of mobile applications development startup, Innopage Limited, specialized in e-Publishing technologies and mobile apps development for iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Smart TV platforms. His current suite of Apps include Worthy, Carrot, and Ticker, they were all heavily featured by Apple on the App Store when first released.

Keith is a frequent guest speaker for local universities and industry organizations. In 2011, Keith was invited by HK Publishing Federation and The HK Printers Association as guest speaker to share e-Book development experiences at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the most important annual event for worldwide printers and publishers.

George Strakhov

George (Georgy) Strakhov was born in Georgia, USSR in 1987 and had to flee from Georgia to Moscow, Russia at the age of 6 with his family because of the civil war in the region.

After spending some time in Moscow State University studying South Asian History, Hindi and Urdu he understood that his calling was more in the present rather than in the past.

At the age of 18 he dropped out of university to start two businesses: ESL school and a web development studio. Accidentally he stumbled upon advertising industry & got fascinated by the spirit of changing human behavior as a practical way of studying it. He soon joined a rapidly growing digital agency in Moscow as a New Business Lead focused on international Clients.

He later co-founded Tribal DDB Moscow and lead its Client Service and Strategy department, growing the agency from 3 to 16 people and working with Clients such as Philips, Cirque du Soleil, PepsiCo, McDonald's and many others.

At the end of 2010 he decided to follow his dream to see the world. In 2011 George moved to Hong Kong and joined Tribal DDB Hong Kong as a Digital Strategist, responsible for local and regional planning for Clients such as McDonald's, Hang Seng Bank, Vitasoy and Manulife.

Outside work George is a happy husband, a father of two, a runner, a musician, a programmer and an entrepreneur.

Siu Shan is a digital media specialist and a User Experience Lead focusing on design strategies, product design and business model development. Siu Shan fulfilled senior UX design roles in technology firms and has over a decade of industry experience. Her experience has led her to collaborating work with startups on translating ideas to a viable business model. Siu Shan is a native from England and currently lives and works in Hong Kong.

Raphael Cohen

Joanne Ooi

Ooi is the CEO and co-founder of international fine jewelry ecommerce site,, which won the Most Innovative Retailer of the Year award from the industry in 2012, soon after the site's inception. Plukka retails exclusive, extremely creative, best-quality fine designer jewelry at huge savings through an innovative online business model which eliminates middlemen. The brand and its products have appeared and been written about in many leading international media including Vogue, Elle, InStyle, the Financial Times, Mashable and TechCrunch, among many others.

Prior to Plukka, in 2009, Ooi founded environmental NGO, Clean Air Network ("CAN"), with other prominent environmentalists, including Christine Loh. CAN quickly became one of the fastest-growing and most prominent environmental NGOs in Asia. Together with Loh, Ooi was nominated to Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential" list in 2011, for CAN's impact on environmental policymaking and awareness.

Before CAN, Ooi was the Creative Director of Shanghai Tang. Largely credited with the turn-around of Shanghai Tang in 2004, Ooi has been profiled in the New York Times, Time Magazine, Good Morning America and appeared on the cover of Fast Company Magazine, among many other international media.

Ooi graduated from Columbia University and has a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Alan Perkins

CTO (Asia Pacific) - Rackspace

Alan Perkins is Chief Technology Officer, Asia Pacific, Rackspace, based in Sydney. In his role, he is responsible for driving continued growth and technological innovation in the region.

Prior to joining Rackspace, Perkins spent more than 10 years at software developer Altium in key leadership and specialist consulting roles, including seven years as the CIO.

During his tenure at Altium, Perkins played a pivotal role preparing and implementing strategies to move the entire business systems to the cloud and was directly responsible for driving company-wide efficiencies and innovations.

Perkins was named by The Australian as one of the Top 20 people to watch in technology 2012, and in 2009, was a finalist for the IDC Asia Pacific CIO of the Year Award. In the same year he won an Enterprise Innovation Award for Cloud innovation from IDC.

Holger Bartel is a web designer & developer. He co-founded uforepublic design studio in 2001 and opened the Hong Kong branch in 2009. He now mostly works with his web design consultancy firm foobartel Ltd, creating web experiences with a focus on mobile. He's passionate about building awareness for a future-friendly & standards-based web, founded and runs the Open Device Lab HK in 2012 and occasionally speaks at international web design conferences.

Aditya Kedia

Aditya is a Design Researcher, Strategist and Educator with expertise and experience in Human Centered Design for innovation and problem solving. He has worked with corporate, start-ups, non-profits as well as educational institutes and comes from a diverse educational and professional background. He believes in harnessing the power of human centered design to drive change at individual, social and organizational level for a delightful user experience and sustainable development. Some of his key areas of interest include interactive media, wearable technology, 3D printing and data visualization.
